ABSTRACT

Dr. Symonds was born in 1893 and has been Professor of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, since 1924. A graduate of Harvard College of the class of 1915, he received his Ph.D. degree from Columbia University in 1923. For two years he was Professor of Education and Psychology at the University of Hawaii. He has been a member of the American Psychological Association since 1923, and is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology. During World War II, he was senior staff psychologist in area S of the Office of Strategic Services. His main interest is in dynamic psychology and its applications to child guidance, mental hygiene and personality theory. At present he is carrying on extensive research in the counseling of teachers and in studying the relation of teaching personality to teaching effectiveness. He is the author of the following books: Measurement in Secondary Education, Ability Standards for Standardized Achievement Tests in the High School, The Nature of Conduct, Tests and Interest Questionnaires in the Guidance of High School Boys, Diagnosing Personality and Conduct, Mental Hygiene of the School Child, Psychological Diagnosis in Social Adjustment, Measurement of the Personality Adjustments of High School Pupils, Education and the Psychology of Thinking, The Psychology of Parent-Child Relationships, The Dynamics of Home Adjustment, Dynamic Psychology, Adolescent Fantasy, Dynamics of Parent- Child Relationships, The Ego and the Self. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Educational Research, Psychological Monographs, and Personality Symposia. He was President of the Educational Division of the American Psychological Association in 1947–1948, and at present is President of the New York Society of Clinical Psychologists.
