ABSTRACT

THESE NOTES are from the Veterans Administration Mental Hygiene Clinic, where John Doe went for out-patient treatment following his discharge from the hospital.

When I went to the Reception Room to get the patient I found him pacing back and forth in the hallway, a tall, slender, somewhat athletic looking fellow with black hair and grey eyes. He was quite tense during the interview, shifted frequently in the chair, looked out the window, frequently crossed and uncrossed his legs, and spoke rather rapidly. Early in the interview the patient was very hostile and indicated a lot of resistance about treatment. I therefore spent considerable time discussing this with him. He became noticeably more relaxed at the point that I talked with him about the interrelationship of physical symptoms and emotions.
