The Situation after the Death of Abdur Rahman.— When the Am ir was at the point of death the princes and leading officials, who had been warned, assembled in the Bagh-iBala palace. During the night of October I, upon the announcement of his death, a h igh official took the late Ruler’s kulla and, setting it on Habibulla’s head, declared him Amir. The princes and officials a p pro ved the act, and, taking him by the hand, one by one proffered their allegiance to him.1 H ab ib u lla then proceed ed to the A rk, situated inside Kabul, w h ic h was strongly held by reliable troops, and contained the arsenal and treasury; in the morning, the corpse of the Amir was also brought to the same stronghold.
