ABSTRACT

The field investigation of the various Ubaid settlement sites in the Eastern Province has resulted in the confirmation of the appraisal based upon the initial examination of the surface data. As was briefly outlined at the end of the preceding chapter, the surface artefacts and the clustering and spread of the settlements already indicated a consistent, successive chronological distribution. This suggests the presence of early-middle Ubaid period examples in the southern-interior and middle coastal ranges of the province. Later Ubaid parallels appear to be confined to more northerly coastal latitudes. This has largely been borne out by excavation of the major mound sites, Ain Qannas, Dosariyah and Abu Khamis.
