ABSTRACT

The investigation in this area (Map 6) started at the site of Ain Qannas because early Hajji Mohammed pottery fragments (Pl. VII, 1–3) had previously been found on its surface. Also, the sites in this southern inland area have visibly more substantial amounts of stone tools than pottery, in contrast to the northerly coastal sites. Thus, work in this area was confined to testing the mound of Ain Qannas, although a limited survey collection was undertaken at the few surface Ubaid sites around this mound and at those located further north, near Abqaiq. Below, brief references will be made on the location of, and the collections from, these surface sites.
