ABSTRACT

An array of rangeland improvement technology appears applicable to the Arabian Gulf, but it is critical that the cause of deterioration of the range resources be recognized and that corrective measures be implemented prior to initiation of range improvement programs. The major cause of over exploitation and consequent deterioration of rangelands in the Arabian Gulf is the human population increase, the concomitant increase in livestock numbers, and a declining resource base. Efforts to improve range condition must be preceded by development of land use policies and complementary schemes for livestock and crop production. Technical improvements must be integrated into the scheme of land use, culture of the region, and current indigenous practices. Technologies applicable to the Arabian Gulf Region include: proper stocking, protection and rest-rotation grazing systems, water point development, establishment of fodder shrub plantations, range seeding, control of undesirable plants, emergency feed reserves, water harvesting, and livestock development programs.
