ABSTRACT
Critical realism is a compromise between views of the idea-object relation which it regards as extreme. On one side is a thoroughgoing realism which would abolish the idea by breaking it up into a mental act and non-mental object. On the other is idealism, which would abolish the non-mental object by assimilating it to the stuff of ideas. Critical realism begins by rejecting both the one and the other. 1
