ABSTRACT
The maxim makes conversation sound as if it were always taking place in a law court, where, of course, such a maxim is strictly observed. Moreover, witnesses swear not only to tell the truth (quality), but the whole truth (quantity) and nothing but the truth (relation/relevance). But truthfulness is still a goal or norm in ordinary everyday speech, since telling lies impedes communication (amongst other things).
