ABSTRACT

A more reliable view of force and motion Aristotle’s explanation of how forces control motion is a powerful view because it is built on observation and experience. However, it is not reliable because it does not predict the motion of objects accurately in a wide range of contexts. It was Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) who eventually provided us with more dependable understanding of forces and motion. Newton recognised that objects continue to move naturally without the help of forces. He realised that forces change motion. In other words, forces make objects go faster, or slower or change direction. If there are no forces acting on an object it will continue to move at a constant speed or remain at rest.
