ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the importance of improving learning through critical reflection on aspects of our own and others’ practice, and on pupils’ learning. It examines some definitions of reflective practice and offers suggestions for ways of supporting reflection on practice, and of evaluating whether the outcomes of reflection contribute to improvements in pupils’ learning. You will find a number of slightly different phrases or terms about reflective practice used in different books, including in this chapter. We have tended to use the phrase ‘reflection on practice’ to encompass reflection on our own practice, reflection on our pupils’ learning and reflection on what we learn by observing others. However, it is important to remember that the improvement of learning is always the main focus of the process.
