ABSTRACT

Police efforts to maintain order have been increasingly supplemented over the post-war period, most spectacularly by private security firms. Related groups such as Customs and Excise also operate to detect crime in their specialised areas. Ordinary citizens have been drafted in, notably through Neighbourhood Watch schemes, and have been encouraged to use ‘hotlines’ to name those suspected of social security frauds. Many public spaces are now covered by 24-hour camera surveillance.
