ABSTRACT

ILT surveys had three major aspects: (i) Extensive factual material was collected about the workplace. For

example, personnel records were used to establish facts about: shift systems, recruittnent and training procedures, labour turnover, absenteeism and accident rates, trade-union membership, safety record. Personnel records, however, rarely give details of

the company's ethnic-minority workforce, and data collection needs to establish such factors as country of origin, age, education, languages spoken, and opportunities to use or acquire English.
