ABSTRACT
After the middle of the eleventh century, reform movements that began in many regions and eventually gained control of the papacy introduced great changes into the western church. To understand the revolutionary nature of those changes, it will be useful to look at the structures of the church about the year 1000, before the reformers set to work.
