The ruling dynasty in Russia, the Romanovs, were absolute sovereigns in every sense. Heads of Church and State, they presented a semi-divine image to their far-flung subjects. The history of Russia throughout the nineteenth century is the history of the five men who in turn occupied the imperial throne.
