ABSTRACT

When all this is over, and I can order with old-time carelessness ‘a nice Dover sole’, ‘a pound and a half of Scotch salmon’, ‘a couple of lobsters’, or what about ‘a bit of smoked haddock for breakfast’?… And when I do not feel inclined to cook I want to be able to drive without care for petrol or the police, to some well-appointed grill-room and eat a chop or a steak with ‘pommes allumettes’ for half a crown [2/6d.] instead of having to stodge through a typical schoolroom dinner for five shillings and a two-shilling cover charge.
