ABSTRACT
An introduction to matter and changes in state of matter is found elsewhere (18 and 19). Here we consider the basic properties of matter in more detail. The topic is divided into three sections corresponding to the three main states of matter: gas, liquid and solid. Each section starts at the smallest scale, looking at molecular or atomic explanations for the observed properties. The sections then go on to consider large-scale properties.
