ABSTRACT

Waves are found in all parts of the natural world. You have seen waves at the sea’s surface, and may have seen evidence of waves in the atmosphere (wave-like cloud forms). Earthquakes cause shock waves to pass through the Earth’s interior. Light, other forms of electromagnetic radiation (for example X-rays and radio waves), and sound all travel in waves. While these wave types are very different from each other in some respects, they share a number of common characteristics. They carry energy, transporting this energy from place to place; and they do this by cycling energy between pairs of internal energy storages (see 28.2.5).
