ABSTRACT
During this book we frequently refer to features of the Earth, particularly the various zones of the solid earth, the oceans and the atmosphere. It is the purpose of this section to provide a context for the phenomena introduced elsewhere. This section also reinforces our intention that this book is not meant to be an end in itself, but has been written to enhance your appreciation of those processes which are occurring in the world around us.
