ABSTRACT
The element silicon and the minerals it forms deserve our special attention. This is because most rocks are composed of minerals based on oxides of silicon (silicates). Here our intention is to introduce you to the basic chem istry of this important class of substances which you will repeatedly encounter when studying rocks, minerals and soils.
