Germany may be over-regulated and humourless, but it has at least reinvented itself as a prosperous, humane society after two world wars and Nazism, which is why Germans care what people think about them. The English have conspicuously failed to reinvent themselves. They just got poorer . . . but at least the English have the saving grace of being able to laugh at them selves.' 1
