ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter we will try to make some generalizable points regarding the nature of institutional adaptation in general, and the experience that the individual smaller member-states of the EU have had with respect to the process of Europeanization. As was indicated in the introductory chapter, the aim of this volume has been to examine how the political institutions in eight small member-states and two non-members have responded to the internal and external demands springing from EC/EU membership. For that purpose we will organize our observations around the three dimensions of adaptation that we have highlighted: governmental, political and strategic. However, since the greater part of the previous chapters deals with governmental adaptation, we will treat this aspect in more detail.
