It has often been noted that lexicological variance in English is prominently realised in pairs of verb expressions where one member is unitary, the other phrasal. Thus we have tolerate beside put up with, simplify beside make easy, reclaim beside take back – choices often offering shades of meaning as well as stylistic appropriacy.
