ABSTRACT
Senator Moynihan has raised an alarm about the increasing levels of deviancy in contemporary United States society. He claims that current levels of homelessness, family break down, drug abuse and crime have exceeded the standards that most Americans can 'afford to recognise'. Indeed he argues that the only way Americans can cope with this 'epidemic' is to define deviancy downwards, so that previously stigmatised behaviour becomes acceptable.
