ABSTRACT

Many types of sanitary appliances are required in buildings to fulfil a variety of specialised functions and are supplied with water either directly from the main, or from hot or cold storage vessels. It is essential that the supply water is not contaminated by foul water and for this reason in most cases the taps are designed to discharge above the flooding level of the appliance, to prevent the risk of back siphonage of the foul water into the supply pipe. A sanitary appliance should be designed so that its fouling area is reduced to the minimum and should have durable, easily cleaned and non-absorbent surfaces.
