ABSTRACT

In 1988 less than 7 per cent of the full-time construction industry workforce were women (EOC 1988) and over 80 per cent of these are estimated to have been in traditionally women’s jobs such as secretarial and clerical (Gale 1991). In 1992 only 40 out of 8452 (CIOB 1992) corporate members of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) were women and in 1991/92 only 13 per cent of university building undergraduates were women (UFC 1992). In the same year only 8 per cent of first-year building undergraduates in polytechnics were women (PCAS 1992).
