Cispadane Republic (1796-1797) An early ephemeral client-republic in northern Italy Con this-southern-side of the River Po') concocted by Napoleon in October 1796 from his recent conquests. Comprising the provinces of Emilia, Bologna and :vlodena, the Cispadane Republic is subsumed by the larger Cisalpine Republic to the north inJuly 1797.

Georgia (until 1801) A traditional independent kingdom in the Trans-Caucasus which accepts Russian suzerainty in 1783 before being annexed into the Russian Empire in 1801. Although little Russification is attempted by tsarist authority, no political autonomy or national recognition is permitted Georgia over the nineteenth century. Georgia proclaims its independence after the fall of the tsarist empire in May 1918 but is forcibly reclaimed by the Bolshevik government in April 1921.
