ABSTRACT

Azerbaidzhan A Muslim territory of the Trans-Caucasus, part of which is acquired by Russia from Persia in the early nineteenth century (notably by the Treaty of Turkmenchai in 1828). Effectively partitioned between Russia and Persia over the nineteenth century, Azerbaidzhan is occupied by the Turks after the fall of tsarism in 1917 and reunited under Ottoman rule. 'Russian Azerbaidzhan' declares its independence in May 1918 but is forcibly reincorporated into Bolshevik Russia by the Red Army in May 1920.
