ABSTRACT
A definition of terms is useful at this point: Bending stresses are longitudinal stresses, i.e. acting parallel to the longitudinal axis of the beam, which may be tensile or compressive, and are induced by the application of a bending moment. Shearing stresses are lateral or longitudinal stresses, acting tangentially to the plane of reference, and are induced by the application of shearing forces.
