ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the area from the Bering Sea in the north via the Asian seaboard and the tropical west Pacific to eastern Australia and New Zealand. It spans a great spectrum of shallow-water environments from cold to tropical, brackish to marine, turbid to clear water. From a practical point of view, it has to be recognised that the great variety of languages, the sometimes parochial attitude towards taxonomy and (A) Localities on the western margin of the Pacific Ocean: (1) Gulf of Anadyr; (2) Peter the Great Gulf; (3) Brunei; (4) Labuk Sabah; (5) Jakarta Bay; (6) Purari River; (7) Papuan lagoon; (8) Cavalli Islands, Bay of Islands, Great Barrier island.
