ABSTRACT

The shallow-water areas of Europe have been studied for two centuries and many taxa have been described. However, there has been much confusion because many of the early descriptions were poor and the illustrations inadequate. As elsewhere, species of Elphidium have presented problems. Many forms attributed to E. excavatum (Terquem) are now considered to be E. williamsoni. Nonion depressulus was used both for the forms that belong there and also for another group which was named Protelphidium anglicum (Murray 1965b) and is now considered to be Haynesina germanica (see Banner and Culver 1978). Species of Cassidulina have been discussed by Sejrup and Guibault (1980) and Mackensen and Hald (1988).
