ABSTRACT

Reactionstotheperceivedproblemsofthelogicalpositivisttraditionof geographyhavegenerallybeenidentifiedasfollowingoneoftwomain alternatives:ontheonehandabroadlyhumanistperspective,andon theotheraradicalneo-Marxistorhistoricalmaterialistapproach(KobayashiandMackenzie,1989;Johnston,1991a).Whilethereissome overlap,andinthe1990sanincreasingdialoguebetweenthesetraditions,theirpracticeinthe1970sand1980swassufficientlydifferent inemphasistojustifytheirseparation.Thischapterthereforefocuses ontheformer,whereasChapter7addressestheradicaltraditionand thedevelopmentofacriticalgeography.
