ABSTRACT
In a little more than three decades, British society and the British economy had been subjected to immense strains and losses. The most obvious economic costs of this period were attributable to the two world wars, but the existence of mass unemployment meant that almost the entire interwar period had been one of wasted economic and human resources, and blighted individual lives.
