ABSTRACT
An earth-retaining wall in equilibrium resists horizontal pressure. This pressure could be evaluated by the theory of elasticity, but more practically an empirical coefficient of earth pressure at rest, ko , is used; i.e. if the weight of soil above any depth z is yz, then the horizontal earth pressure at rest = koyz.
