This chapter discusses the lines that are drafted in Nbk; in two versions on facing pages the text given here is that of what appears as the later rewritten version of rougher and more heavily cancelled lines on. These read: And who feels discord now or sorrow or loneliness love is god today and these dark slaves of dim tomorrow track that great shade which far away beckons, betrayed and to betray Love Mary S transcribed a version in adds. The metre, and the mood of brief comfort in a long perspective of unhappiness, may alternatively suggest that this fragment is associated with the genesis of 'Lines Written among the Euganean Hills' and therefore dates from early October 1818. The metre and rhyme however suggest connection with 'Stanzas written in dejection' the draft for which surrounds these lines in Nbk, and Chernaik.
