ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the lines that are a relatively close translation of Moschus's Idyll v. Moschus was a Gk Bucolic poet of the second century BC, and S. also translated his Idylls iii and IV. Mary's jnl records that S. read Theocritus and Moschus in Gk in 1816, but none of his three translations from Moschus can be comfortably dated to that period, and it is likely that he carried his copy of the Greek bucolic poets with him to Italy. The lines are drafted on the back of one of two sheets also containing S'. s draft for his translation of part of the 'Lament for Adonis', which are now in the British Library. The British Library MS is headed 'Pan, Echo & the Satyr', in a hand other than S'. s. Forman 1876-1877 uses this title; in 1824 the lines were headed 'Translation from Moschus'.
