ABSTRACT

In the previous two chapters, we have been discussing propositions which are contained as elements within other propositions. We have used the term ‘main’ proposition for the latter and the term ‘included’ proposition for the former. In grammatical terms, our discussion has been about ‘sentences’ that contain ‘embedded clauses’. The included proposition or embedded clause was an element in or a constituent of the main proposition or sentence. In this chapter, we are going to consider ways in which independent (main) propositions combine together.
