ABSTRACT
Los Angeles is the quintessentially car-orientated city, yet even in the 1930s there were complaints of stagnation and delay. Since then huge expenditure has made it the most mobile city in the world – for twenty hours a day – but unfortunately half of the trips occur in the other four hours and are congested and polluting. The urban transport problem is clearly very deep seated indeed if it cannot be solved in this rich and sophisticated city.
