ABSTRACT
Since the use of markets as a means of allocating health care resources may be inappropriate, an alternative method for resource allocation is required. In this chapter we examine an alternative possibility, namely, economic evaluation. A justification for economic evaluation is provided, that lays the foundation for the analysis of the following chapters. The discussion concentrates on explanation of the types of economic evaluation and the various tools employed. Methods for conducting an economic evaluation are also discussed.
