ABSTRACT

Stickley and Freshwater argue that ‘nursing involves the formation of a meaningful relationship through the development of an effective interpersonal process’ (2006 p. 13). They go on to point out that despite the emphasis placed on the importance of effective interpersonal and communication skills in nursing, there remain considerable variations in the quality of nurse-patient communication and there is a need for significant improvement.
