ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will consider some of the issues that underpin the way in which research is developed. This is important because the newcomer to research in health care is faced with a range of approaches to research that can be baffling and confusing at the outset as apparently contrary perspectives are offered as the ‘right way’ in which research should be developed. Consequently this includes a review of the following:

The philosophical basis of research.

The way in which knowledge is developed.

Developing knowledge through different approaches to research.
