ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will:

Identify the political roots of feminist geography in first and second wave feminist political activism.

Explore how geographers have drawn on feminist thinking to challenge mainstream understandings of space, place and the discipline of geography.

Focus on the implications of feminist approaches in human geography.

Introduce some recent theoretical work in affiliated disciplines – in particular sociology, cultural studies and critical international relations – that have attempted to rethink the category of gender.
