ABSTRACT

Following the unacknowledged partial publication in Ahasuerus, The Wanderer: A Dramatic Legend (1823) of S.’s translation of Purgatorio XXVIII, 1–51 (see headnote), Medwin published the ampler version given below in The Angler in Wales, or, Days and Nights of Sportsmen, 2 vols (London 1834) ii 218–20 introduced by the prose passage below. The version that he later published in Medwin is substantially identical, except for the substitution of woof (the reading of S.’s draft) for roof in l. 2, though there are a few further minor alterations and considerable differences in punctuation.
