ABSTRACT
These lines are drafted in ink on page 373 of Nbk 15. The page is otherwise blank apart from the word ‘Paris’ which is written and cancelled twice at the top. The same word is written four times on page 371 and at various places on pp. 342–3. This doodling may have been stimulated by the transcription that S. made on page 364 of Dante's Purgatorio xx 43–5, 49–54, 94–6, which includes the line (52) ‘Figliuol fu’ io d'un beccaio di Parigi’ (I was the son of a butcher of Paris), spoken in the poem by the soul of Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian dynasty.
