ABSTRACT
First publ. M & W, 10 Nov. 1855, the last poem in the second volume (apart from the ‘epilogue’, One Word More); repr. 1863 (when it was placed in ‘Lyrics’: see Appendix D, p. 747), 18652, 1868, 1872, 1888. Our text is 1855. There was one change in proof; after publication the poem was unrevised in all collected eds., with only minor variants in one volume of selections, giving it a claim to be the least-revised poem in M & W.
