First publ. M & W, 10 Nov. 1855; repr. 1863 (when it was placed in ‘Lyrics’: see Appendix D, p. 747), 1868, 1888. Our text is 1855. Along with One Way of Love, this is the only poem in H proof for which there are no variants, and along with The Twins and Transcendentalism it is one of only three poems in M & W not to be included in any volume of selections.
