ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a structured discussion about the emerging recognition of the links between water, cities and sustainable development. It looks at the key facts of world urbanization trends and economic geography, as well as infrastructure development and financing. It argues that a path towards sustainable development is also about addressing poverty and income distribution, while considering climate uncertainties and risk management. Lastly, it discusses selected policy challenges and recommendations, and makes an overall appeal for more effective integrated urban water management, including the need for more empirical work, and better statistical information.
