ABSTRACT

The long history of urbanization in Latin America, coupled with continued urban growth, means that Latin American cities face the challenge of expanding water services while replacing older and ageing systems. Will Latin America continue along with a strong focus on large linear water systems, or will it begin looking more and more into decentralized and ‘green’ solutions to water issues as well? This chapter looks into how New York City, Boston, Seattle, Philadelphia and Milwaukee have managed their watersheds and undertaken other green infrastructure developments in novel ways that harmonize with natural systems, and draw insights of relevance for Latin American cities.
