ABSTRACT

Time-lapse is a technique whereby a large number of still images are taken over a long period, which are then compressed into a motion sequence that is viewed over a much shorter period. Played at normal speed, time appears to speed up and events and processes that usually appear only subtly to the human eye, if at all, such as the apparent motion of stars in the night sky, a flower awakening or clouds forming and reforming, become very pronounced. Essentially, time-lapse photography enables us to actually witness the effects of the passing of time. This section looks at how to create a basic time-lapse sequence, including calculating the progress of a sequence and the two most important technical aspects of photography: light and exposure.
