ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nouns and its types. A phrasal predicate is a nominal phrase with one of the following headwords: Proper noun, common noun, adjectival noun, temporal or locative adverbial noun and Gerund. An adjectival noun has a masculine form as well as a feminine one and adjectives exist in masculine-feminine pairs. The masculine and feminine examples of substantive nouns above illustrate in this chapter. In substantive nouns a substantive is either masculine or feminine. There aren't masculine-feminine pairs of the same substantive. A gerund is either masculine or feminine. There are no masculine-feminine pairs of the same gerund. The chapter covers the grammar points which students would expect to encounter in their first year of learning Arabic. Examples and exercises are provided throughout, allowing students to reinforce and consolidate their learning. Basic Arabic is an ideal grammar reference and practice resource for both beginners and students with some knowledge of the language.
