ABSTRACT
This chapter explains the pronouns in grammar. In English, pronouns are free-standing words; they are never suffixed to other words. In Arabic, pronouns can be suffixed to other words. The chapter also discusses the two types of pronouns. Possessive pronoun suffixes attached to nouns and object pronoun suffixes attached to prepositions: the pronoun suffixes are matched with their English pronoun equivalents to illustrate how number, gender and person are reflected in Arabic suffixes. Possessive pronouns in Arabic are suffixed to nouns, adding a measure of specificity to the nouns. The nouns are therefore definite nouns that do not accept the diacritics. Object pronouns are suffixed to verbs and some prepositions. The free-standing Arabic personal pronouns are matched with their English pronoun equivalents. The differences in pronouns are noted based on number, gender and person. The chapter shows the subject markers for the perfect and imperfect verbs for reference.
